What to expect
The first thing to say is that I provide a bespoke service. That’s because as a mum and teacher, I know that no two children are the same. And that is why the help that I offer is different in every single case. If you or your child need to find a spelling program, I’ll help you find one. If the current issues are numeracy or organisational skills, or problems with accessing the curriculum across the board then we would address that. My service is tailored to the individual.
Getting to understand the issues involved is critical. So, I like to start by listening and understanding. Like all good relationships, it starts with a cup of tea and a natter. We’ll discuss your (or your child’s) needs and the necessary support.
Following this, we agree a regular appointment time either face-to-face or online. But the communication doesn’t stop there. It’s important to continue to talk about the barriers to learning that someone is struggling with.
From personal experience, I know that there is real value in helping families, with a dyslexic member, to understand what the challenges they face and how they can be supported. It’s very much a team effort and I know that the dyslexic family member, and the rest of the family working as a team benefit from this approach.
I will offer practical, simple solutions to help things become more accessible. Here are some of the things that this might include…
- Preteach (talk about things that are upcoming in class)
- Vocabulary Word Banks
- Liaising with school teachers to identify ways to support the child to learn within the classroom
- Learning to create checklists to remember necessary “to do” items
- Showing tricks to overcome barriers, For example: accessing an audiobook to support comprehension, or using technology to help with spelling.
What not to expect
I don’t follow a program of study. Traditional tutoring fills gaps. My goal is to empower people to be able to access the education on offer within the classroom.
I won’t just teach your child to have nice handwriting. I won’t just give them spellings to learn. My work is about delivering wider practical solutions,
